Oil Hit $110 as Stocks Priced an Iran Deal, October 2026

The Take

The Iran de-risking trade this week lived entirely in stocks. S&P 500 futures closed at 7,800.25 on October 21, up 0.58% on the day a Pakistan and Qatar framework for Iranian frozen funds and nuclear inspections hit the wires. By Thursday morning futures were back down at 7,722.75, below where they started the week. Oil never played along at all, running from $96.34 on October 14 to $110.01 on October 19, and the 10-year yield rose instead of falling. When one market prices peace and the two markets sitting closest to the actual risk price the opposite, I go with oil and bonds.

What the Data Shows

Start with the 10-year, because it's the number the de-risking story has to explain. It was 5.09% on October 16 and 5.15% on October 21, per FRED and CBOE. Yields went up in a week that was supposed to bring them down. There was a real move lower earlier in the month, just not on this news: the 10-year peaked at 5.31% on October 5 and fell 22 basis points by October 16, and that move was done before the deal headlines showed up.

Daily closes of S&P 500 futures and the 10-year Treasury yield from September 21 to October 22, 2026, showing the yield climbing back toward its October peak while stocks gave up their deal-headline gain.

The curve did flatten, and how it flattened is the part worth knowing. The 10-year minus 2-year spread was 0.51% on October 7 and 0.32% on October 21, per FRED. Most of that came from the long end falling in the first half of the month, and the short end has carried it since. The 2-year went from 4.74% on October 16 to 4.79% on October 20 while the 10-year rose 3 basis points over the same 2 sessions, which is the market pricing more Fed, not less war risk.

The physical market got worse while all of this was happening. UKMTO counted 15 attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz between October 6 and October 14, with 11 of them in the last 4 days of that window. Kpler put crude transiting the strait at 2.9 million barrels on October 11, down from 20.8 million barrels on October 8, against a pre-war average of 17.1 million barrels a day. Both figures were reported by Al Jazeera on October 14, and WTI spot closed at $107.89 on October 20 per EIA daily data, still 12% above where it sat on the 14th.

Why It Matters for Your Portfolio

If you're long equities because Iran risk is coming out of the market, the oil market and the bond market haven't signed off on that yet. Oil going up and the 10-year going up at the same time is the combination that hurts long-duration names and anything carrying floating-rate debt, which covers most of the AI buildout. Gold was the one hedge that behaved like a de-risking week, down 1.28% between October 19 and the morning of October 22, and the dollar index slipped 0.44% over the same stretch. One session of stock strength on a preliminary headline isn't a repricing.

What I'm Watching

The FOMC meets October 27 and 28, and that decision is where a 14% oil move either gets treated as a supply shock to look through or as an inflation problem. I care more about whether the 2-year keeps climbing into that meeting than what the 10-year does, because the short end is the honest read on Fed expectations right now. The other thing is whether a signed agreement actually shows up, since the October 21 reporting described preliminary approval from both sides and the diplomats quoted said a breakthrough wasn't imminent. If WTI gets back under $96 and the 10-year takes out 5.09% to the downside, the de-risking trade is real and I'll say so.
